Anorthosite. Intrusive igneous, plutonic . Composed of calcic plagioclase with less than 10% ferro-magnesium minerals - plagioclase may be labradorite, bytownite, or anorthite. The name is from anorthose, an old name for triclinic feldspars. Anorthosite is often associated with gabbro

Rocks like this make up much of the Highlands of the Moon, where feldspar produces the light color. Shortly after material gathered together to form the Moon, the outer Moon melted. Inequigranular anorthosite. Ths rock has a continuum of grain sizes, from very small to quite large. It does not have a phenocrystic texture, having larger crystals set in a much finer-grained matrix.
(1984) studied 7 additional clasts, including magnesian anorthosite, troctolite and “dunite”. Dickinson et al. (1985) studied basalts from the processing fines. But Paul Warren made the most fuss, so we shall start with his observations: c1 (W-101) from ,46 and ,116 Detailed Description.

Marvelous, I was there last week collecting a few pegmatite specimens and I am glad it is still there in one )large) piece! Anorthosite plutons occur in a wide range of sizes. Some smaller plutons, exemplified by many anorthosite bodies in the U.S. and Harris in Scotland, cover only a few dozen square kilometres. Larger plutons, like the Mt. Lister Anorthosite, in northern Labrador, Canada, cover several thousands of square kilometres. It could serve as an alternative material in many industrial applications. For example, it could replace kaolin, a major component of glass fiber manufacturing.

Most anorthosite layers are thin (less than 3 m) and only one analysis of plagioclase was obtained for the entire layer. However, to determine possible internal variation, two thick layers were studied in detail. In the 23 m thick layer –13, seven samples were analysed.

The section is ~1 m thick, but the horizontal scale is not linear. To the left the Nodular Troctolite consists of olivine oikocrysts 20–30 cm long (pale) set in a matrix of anorthosite
