The portrait, painted by Jennifer Packer ’12 M.F.A., was commissioned in 2017 by WFF to honor Cromwell’s place in Yale’s history. Honoring the legacy of Otelia Cromwell, the first Black woman to earn a degree from Smith College, Northamptonites and Smithies gathered in John M. Greene Hall to hear Roxanne Gay speak on November 2. Gay is an accomplished American writer, editor, and commentator; her latest work is Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body. Otelia Cromwell is the first known African-American student to graduate from Smith College. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1874, Otelia Cromwell was the first of six children born to Lucy McGuinn and John Wesley Cromwell, a journalist, educator, and the first African American to practice law with the Interstate Commerce Commission. The portrait of Otelia Cromwell (1874-1972, PhD 1926), tucked between Davenport College’s dining hall and common room was painted by Yale graduate Kenturah Davis (MFA 2018). Born in Washington, D.C., Cromwell earned her Ph.D. in English, becoming the first African American woman to receive a PhD from Yale. Otelia Cromwell Day is a Smith College community-wide celebration!
